Structural architecture

Design challenge

For this garment, I focused on an architectural approach to drapery. The fabric that is drapped and flowy is a light weight silk that’s not very structured. To hold up the wrapped structure I wanted, I created a spherical boning, using 3-4 equally sized pieces, and sewed into individual circles. I put these circles together to make 3 spheres with a hole through the center so you can see through it as a dramatic effect. Using a ruler I placed these spheres on a A-line dress fondation that holds up the dress. I placed the speheres according to weight and which angle would support the shape. Structurally, this was a challenge I was excited for.

Due to covid-19 this project remains unfinished. In due time this maybe reworked and created with a more elevated idea.
